A Russian shopping mall is under fire for the parking spots designated only for women. I’m Amy E. Feldman.
A Russian department store came under fire this month for creating extra wide parking spots for women. The store said the large size was for loading packages, which was much more politically correct than the reason given by Chinese parking authorities who also came up with the idea of designating extra wide spots for women, whose driving skills, Chinese representatives pointed out, were not superb.
It’s an outrage. And a huge convenience. And also, in the US, illegal. Unlike handicap parking spots, which are mandated by the Americans With Disabilities Act to allow accessible parking to people who are physically unable to park in or walk from regular sized spaces there is no physical reason both to treat men worse and simultaneously think of women worse than their other-gendered counterparts.
Russian traffic police have since ordered the store to remove the spots since there is no concept of male or female parking in Russian traffic regulations, so it’s dasvidaniya to that sexist convenience. I mean concept.
