In Chicago, the number of speeding tickets issued just went up tenfold. I’m Amy E. Feldman.
The city of Chicago had speed cameras that sent tickets to speeding drivers. In March, the city changed the rules that had previously only ticketed people going more than ten miles an hour to lower the threshold to people who were travelling six miles or more over the speed limit. As a result, the number of tickets sent went from thirty-five thousand tickets in the five weeks before the new threshold went into effect to three hundred ninety eight thousand tickets in the five weeks after. Is that even legal?
For the most part, yes. State laws on when speed cameras can be used and who can issue a ticket vary. New Jersey doesn’t use speed cameras, but Pennsylvania does, and the laws say that speed cameras can be used in work zones, as long as two signs are posted warning drivers they’re being used. If you’re visiting the windy city, be very careful not to ride like the wind.
