Pedestrian Right of Way

One truck driver found out the hard way if it’s true that pedestrians have the right of way.  I’m Amy E. Feldman.

In an attempt to promote pedestrian safety, Nevada police tapped an officer to be the “crosswalk fairy” by making the officer dress up like a fairy to teach people proper crosswalk technique and escort people across the street.  You gotta wonder what the police officer did to make superiors so angry.  One such pedestrian—while being escorted by the fairy—was nearly run over by a semi-truck.  Can you imagine the truck driver’s reaction while being ticketed by an angry fairy?

Traffic laws differ but in virtually every state, pedestrians have the right of way at a crosswalk, so motorists and bicyclists have to yield.  That said, if there is a walk/don’t walk sign, pedestrians have to obey the sign.  And many states have laws prohibiting pedestrians from walking on highways.  But if you are driving or biking, you have to yield or you’ll get points on your license and a fairy big fine.
