Revoking a Diploma

Another organization has registered its displeasure with Vladimir Putin.  I’m Amy E. Feldman.

While many fallen stars have had honorary degrees revoked, once you get an actual diploma, can a college take it away? Yes. #legaltok #degree #putin

In a slight certain to make Vladimir Putin question his entire military strategy, the governing body of World Taekwondo recently revoked Putin’s honorary black belt. One wonders, what is the point of an honorary black belt if you can’t actually defend yourself? Is it just a belt to wear with your suit while you get your bodyguards to beat someone up? Probably not Putin’s biggest problem right now.

While many fallen stars have had honorary degrees revoked, once you get an actual diploma, can a college take it away? Yes. Most colleges’ academic code of conduct says that your diploma can be revoked if the school later learns you have committed plagiarism or other misconduct, as the University of Calgary did fifteen years after a graduate of their master’s program was found to have plagiarized his thesis. And if you invade another country, do not expect your college to stand behind you.
