Who knew? When the Monkees said people say they monkey around they meant the FBI. I’m Amy E. Feldman.
Mickey Dolenz, the last surviving band member of the Monkees, just filed a lawsuit to get more information about the file he learned the FBI kept on him and the band, whom the FBI described as “four young men who dress as ‘beatnik types’”. Who says the FBI was out of touch with the youngsters?
Wonder what the government has to say about you? Ask. Under a law known as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), government agencies must disclose any information requested by the public unless it’s related to a matter of personal privacy, national security, or law enforcement. So first, see if the info you want is already publicly available by going to FOIA.gov. If it isn’t, submit a FOIA request to the agency whose records you want to obtain, and if they don’t give it to you, you can show them you’re not monkeying around and sue to get it.
