Nursing Home Standards

Residents at a Taiwanese nursing home got quite the eyeful when the performer arrived. I’m Amy E. Feldman.

Residents at a nursing home in Taiwan were entertained by the performer, hired by the state-run facility, who turned out to be an exotic dancer, who spent the performance twerking over the residents’ wheelchairs. When a recording of the performance was released on social media, the home received a mountain of criticism—none of which seems to have come from the residents. The home has promised to tighten hiring standards.

But in the US, earlier this year the administration rolled out federal reforms to ensure that every nursing home provides sufficient staff adequately trained to provide high quality care, and to hold facilities accountable for improper and unsafe care. To find information and compare nursing homes, you can go to medicare.gov/care – compare. As for the Taiwanese nursing home, it’s not clear if the incident will lead to penalties or a rash of new applications.
