Hey Alexa, is my boyfriend cheating on me? I’m Amy E. Feldman.
In a TikTok clip that’s now amassed two and a half million views, a woman told of how she had used Alexa to catch her boyfriend cheating on her. Apparently unbeknownst to her now ex, while Alexa devices are programmed not to begin their interactive process until the device “wakes up,” once it does, it records what you ask, and those recordings are stored in the cloud and can be replayed when you open your Alexa app, go to the privacy settings, and review the voice history, where you will hear what Alexa heard, including whomever might have been talking while Alexa was recording.
It may seem like an invasion of privacy, but it isn’t illegal because you can’t expect privacy; you know Alexa is right there. You put it there. Amazon tells you what’s recorded if you look in the terms of use. So don’t wake Alexa if you don’t want anyone who shares your app to know.
