With all the balloons over US airspace, homeowners want to know if they can shoot down a drone if it flies over their property. I’m Amy E. Feldman.
Why aren’t all news reports of unidentified spy balloons in US Airspace set to the song 99 Red Balloons? It seems obvious right? In any event, there do seem to be a lot of folks now who worry, worry, super scurry, calling the troops out in a hurry, shooting down several balloons.
While those balloons have flown thousands of feet above the ground, people wonder if they can shoot down the private drones that annoy them by flying over their yards. NO. Under federal law it is a felony for a private citizen to shoot down a drone, punishable by a fine and jail time, even if it is flying over your property. Also, a bad idea, what with gravity bringing down not just the drone but also the bullets fired at it. Remember, your orders are not to identify, to clarify, or classify. Leave the jets scrambling in the summer sky to the authorities.
