Age Discrimination
The Tampa Bay Times reported that a store manager at an Indiana Dollar Tree allegedly left a sign reading: “I apologize for us closing AGAIN. My 2 new cashiers quit because I said their boyfriends couldn’t stand here for their entire shift. Don’t hire Gen Zs. They don’t know what work actually means. NOW HIRING! *Baby Boomers ONLY!”
NHTSA Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently ordered an airbag manufacturer to recall more than sixty-seven million airbags. In response, the manufacturer said, nope, saying its own testing found no defect. Is that a thing you can do? Say no?
Disability Benefits
An IBM employee was diagnosed with leukemia and put on full disability benefits in 2013. But he recently sued, saying that he is the victim of disability discrimination because hasn’t gotten a raise since he went on disability. The judge just dismissed the case, saying that this is a disability benefit—something that’s not even available to those who aren’t disabled, so by definition he’s not being treated worse because of his disability.
NYC Fat Discrimination Law
According to a study by Vanderbilt University, women who are considered obese earn on average five dollars and twenty-five cents less per hour than women who are considered normal weight. New York City is looking to change that. Last week, New York City Council passed a law that will make it illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of height and weight in housing, employment, and public accommodations in New York City. The sponsors of the bill are hoping the bill will actually lead to changes in culture.
